I caught a teensy fish.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>with the new radiation oncologist that specializes in the brain\u00a0(since my last one ran off to Duke). Introductions had been made and I wasn&#8217;t a new patient in case I need brain radiation at some point, I stil have some of the same concerns I did when I went to Seattle, but leptomeningeal mets trumps all things.<\/p>\n<p>It seems like my brain and spine and everything MRI has been quite the drama lately (my PET-CT was\u00a0a mixed bag , I have an icky cough, but I don&#8217;t know if that is things improving causing it or if it is getting worse).<\/p>\n<p>Leptomeningeal metastases scare the crap out of me. Everything I Dr. Google about them is entirely too unpleasant. Having visible spots on my brain and spine just get my head spinning and every time we have tested so far the tests have come back with cancer cells in there floating around (they aren&#8217;t causing me major damage right this moment, so I must remember to breath &#8211; and now my superstitious side that worries saying something is going well will come back and bite me in the butt&#8230; is freaking out). I have been so hopeful as many women have responded to Methotrexate and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.darngoodlemonade.com\/index.php\/2016\/08\/20\/how\/\">boy did I respond<\/a>, just not how we had planned!<\/p>\n<p>Since I started Topotecan for my leptomeningeal\u00a0metastases, I have started to feel better. After starting Xeloda my energy has improved even more. I do\u00a0have down days after my infusion, but it is easier to push myself to get up and get going. Kadcyla really knew how to knock me down (before that was Taxotere&#8230; so.. yeah).<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday turned into a long day due to fire alarms and being left in a room that doctor didn&#8217;t know I was in (my appointments were pretty much booked on top of each other). Long days at the hospital wear me out! I usually just want to sleep after, which is mostly what I did.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the status of where I am (I don&#8217;t have a copy of the MRI report, and I am usually a bit ick until I see the report itself, so until further notice):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My <strong>leptomeningeal metastases in my thoracic and lumbar spine are showing visible improvement<\/strong>. This means we can take the previous scan and line it up with the current scan and see a change in color of an area (tumors show up as white in tissue in MRI&#8217;s from what I have seen, bone has been black bites out of my bone). This is wonderful news! We haven&#8217;t been able to see if we were making progress there and we have! We do a follow up scan in 8 weeks, in the meantime I am getting Topotecan twice a week for the next couple of weeks (minimum) to see if we can knock it back enough to not show up in my cerebral spinal fluid or my scans.<\/li>\n<li>My <strong>brain appears to be steady<\/strong>. No visible new tumors that they could see and the old ones are the same size (my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.darngoodlemonade.com\/index.php\/2016\/04\/19\/more-than-meets-the-eye\/\">April scan<\/a> sounded the alarm that caused me to to get second opinions, so many little tumors hanging out in my cerebellum). Steady is also wonderful. My very fun and intelligent spine\/brain\/breast oncologist says a happy cancer grows, and we are making it not happy (or something along those lines). I was secretly hoping the intrathecal chemo would maybe also get in there and drop those ones dead, but I will take what I can get. Xeloda is known for penetrating the blood brain barrier, so I am hoping in time they will start to shrink.<\/li>\n<li>My <strong>body still has cancer all over<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; primarily in my lungs, lymph nodes in my chest and abdomen, spine, ribs, clavicle&#8230; yadda yadda. The hope is that Xeloda will be effective here also!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Cross your fingers that side effects will be minimal and the chemos will be effective.
